The Africa the Media Never Shows You

If you’re on Twitter, you may have seen the trending hashtag #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou.

The campaign was started by Rachel, a 17-year-old girl from Ghana. Rachel was tired of only seeing the negative aspects of Africa portrayed in the media, she said those of “poverty, ethnic wars, and the disease”.

She also went on to say “We also want to show people that Africa isn’t only animals, jungles and safaris. We have amazing skyscrapers, hotels, shopping malls and much more.”

Following the launch of the campaign, the BBC got in touch with me to ask me my thoughts on the subject, and to say I was happy about this is an understatement. This whole blog began because I wanted to show people the Africa I know and love, so to be recognised for that and be asked to share my thoughts was probably the highlight of my blogging life so far!

To show my support for the campaign, in my own small way, I just wanted to share a few of my favourite #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou photos. Some you’ve seen before, some you haven’t, but either way, I hope you find interesting, and you never know, some may even surprise you.

My friend George. He asked me how many wives he could have in England. I said one and asked how many wives he had. “I only have one wife. One is enough for me!” He said with a roll of his eyes and a smile.

Plan a Trip to Africa

Want to come on an incredible African adventure in 2018 or 2019?

If you want to go backpacking with an awesome group of likeminded travellers, then join one of my 2018 or 2019 Rock My Adventure small group tours to Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda & the DRC, Zambia, Botswana & Malawi and Morocco!

I will show you a different side of Africa. Not the Africa you see in the media, but the colourful, adventurous, wild and real Africa I know and love.

Rock My Adventure tours are experiential and culturally immersive adventures, but without the hassle of having to find accommodation, working out how to get from A to B and booking all your own activities.

They are laid-back and fun, a bit like an independent backpacking trip (so it doesn’t feel like a tour) but with a group of friends built in – the best of both worlds! Plus you get comprehensive pre-departure support and advice from me!
