Day 2: Cape Maclear, Malawi

In the morning, we’ll take a trip to the local market in Lilongwe – this is a real assault on the senses.

From there, we’ll make our way out of the hustle and bustle of the city towards Cape Maclear (Chembe village) on the shores of Lake Malawi.

Lake Malawi is the world’s biggest freshwater lake and is so big, it actually looks like the ocean. At night, the fishermen use lanterns that twinkle on the water and are the reason the lake became known as the ‘Lake of Stars’.

In the afternoon there will be some free time before we head out to a great local restaurant by the lakeshore for dinner.

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
  • Activities: Lilongwe Market

Day 3: Cape Maclear, Malawi

Today is a free day to take part in the activity (or activities if you’re feeling energetic) of your choice. You will have the opportunity to explore the area and get a glimpse into life in the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’.

Available activities include village tours, snorkelling, stand up paddle boarding, cycling, hiking, canoeing, beach volleyball.

For those who like to scuba dive, the lake is famous for having the best fresh water diving in the world and is home to more species of freshwater fish than any other lake in the entire world and with it being part of the Great Rift Valley, you’ll also be treated to some spectacular underwater scenery too.

In the afternoon, we’ll take boat trip out on the lake to hopefully see some fish eagles and otters that live in the area.

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
  • Activities: Lake Malawi Sunset Boat Trip
Domwe Island Malawi

Day 4: Domwe Island, Malawi

On our last full day at the lake, we’ll kayak over to our very own island (you can also take a boat over if you don’t want to kayak).

Here we’ll enjoy a braai (bbq cooked by our own private chef), lounge around in hammocks, kayak, swim, have a campfire right on the beach and spend the night in true Swiss Family Robinson style.

At night we can watch the fishing boats twinkling in the water whilst the stars twinkle overhead.

And relax…

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tents (All bedding provided, some tents have proper beds allocated on a first-come, first-served basis)
  • Activities: Kayaking to Domwe Island, Beach Braai & Bonfire

Day 5: Lilongwe, Malawi

After breakfast, we’ll take a boat trip back to the mainland. After we’ve said our goodbyes to Lake Malawi, we’ll head back to Lilongwe to get ready for the next part of our journey into Zambia.

There will be some time for shopping at the mall, craft market or local market in the afternoon (Lilongwe is a great place to buy fabric, art and wooden carvings).

The evening is free to do your own thing, but you may want to head to one of Malawi’s great restaurants or sample the nightlife!

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Hotel (Ensuite)
  • Activities: None

Day 6: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

We’ll spend the next 3 days in gorgeous South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.

South Luangwa is one of the best places in Africa to spot leopards – so fingers crossed we’ll be lucky!

We’ll be staying right on the banks of the Luangwa River where animals are often known to wander into the camp, so there will be plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife even when you’re not on safari!

On the way, we will visit a wonderful local textile factory and craft shop where you will have the opportunity to purchase beautiful and unique hand-painted items including bags, cushions, wall hangings and much much more.

In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to take a tour with local guides who will show you around their village and tell you about their way of life, customs. Get ready for some real Zambian hospitality.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
  • Activities: Textile factory & shop

Day 7: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

On day 2, we’ll spend the majority of the day on safari (morning and afternoon/evening game drives) to try and spot all our favourite safari animals.

South Luangwa is an incredible safari destination, mainly due to the landscape and the animals you can see there, as well as the fact that we camp just on the river, waking up to the sounds of hippos in the water.

When it gets hot in the middle of the day, well return to camp to have lunch and you can have a swim in the pool to cool down before we head back out on safari for our final game drive of the day.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
  • Activities: 2 x Safaris in South Luangwa National Park

Day 8: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Today, we’re back out on safari to spot more animals. Those who want to, will have the opportunity to upgrade to a walking safari, something South Luangwa National Park is famous for (extra cost and subject to availability).

In the late afternoon, we’ll head out on our last safari and fingers crossed that we see elephants, lions, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and the elusive leopard!

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Lodge (Ensuite)
  • Activities: 2 x Safaris in South Luangwa National Park

Day 9: Lusaka, Zambia

Today is a long drive day* as we head away from the bush, down to Zambia’s capital, Lusaka.

However, in Africa, the journeys are part of the experience and you’ll never get bored watching the scenery go by and the smiles and waves from the lovely Zambian people.

When we arrive, we’ll have a night to rest in our guest house, before we continue our journey down to Livingstone the following day.

Lusaka is a good place to party too, so if you have some energy, the city awaits!

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse (Ensuite)
  • Activities: None

Day 10: Livingstone, Zambia

Next stop is Livingstone*, the adventure capital of Africa and the home to one of the most spectacular places on earth, Mosi-oa-Tunya (‘The Smoke that Thunders’), better known as Victoria Falls!

And it just happens to be my favourite place in all of Africa. Yes, really!

The afternoon will be free to relax and explore the town.

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Flashpacker Hostel (Ensuite)
  • Activities: None

Or, if you’re feeling slightly less adventurous you may just want to chill by the pool, get clothes made or visit a local market – it’s up to you!

  • Accommodation: Flashpacker Hostel (Ensuite)

Day 12 – 13: Chobe National Park, Botswana

Today is an awesome day as we’re heading into the amazing Chobe National Park, home to up to 120,000 elephants!

We’ll start with a fantastic 3-hour boat cruise along the river and after lunch we’ll go on a game drive through the park.

In the evening, our cook will prepare an awesome dinner and we will spend the night chatting round the camp fire and listening to the sounds of the African bush.

Waking up early, we’ll head off on an early morning game drive. This time of day is best for finding the big cats or wild dogs as they are still active at this time and chances of seeing them are good.

We’ll then have a bush brunch and there will be some time to rest before we head out on an afternoon game drive. You will love this experience!

  • Meals: 1 x Breakfast, 2 x Lunch, 2 x Dinner
  • Accommodation: Camping (All Camping Equipment & Bedding Provided)

The evening is free to do as you please, however you may want to head to a great local restaurant for dinner and drinks.

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Flashpacker Hostel (Ensuite)
  • Activities: Victoria Falls

Day 15: Livingstone, Zambia

In the morning, we’ll take a cycling tour with a local social enterprise, venturing into the villages that surround the main part of town, where we can see a glimpse of local life, meet some of the people who live there and go to places most other tourists don’t go.

In the afternoon there will be some free time to relax by the pool or do a bit of last-minute shopping before we say goodbye over a light dinner and drinks on a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River where we may be lucky to spot animals such as elephants, hippos and giraffes.
