Rock My South Africa, eSwatini (Swaziland) & Mozambique Adventure

South Africa, Swaziland & Mozambique Adventure

So excited to share the latest addition to the Rock My Adventure tours portfolio – South Africa, eSwatini (that’s Swaziland to you and me) and Mozambique!

Do you love being surrounded by nature, beautiful landcapes, live music, being by the ocean, incredible wildlife, going on adventures and meeting local people? Then this is the trip for you!

These are three incredibly diverse and very different countries and I can’t wait to show you what they have to offer!

Rock My Adventure is a small group Africa tour company for solo travellers, groups of friends and couples alike and for those who want to pack a lot into their limited (and precious) time.

The tours are culturally immersive trips created by me to show you a rounded portrayal of the countries we visit and leave you with a new group of like-minded friends and beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.

I work with the best local operators to provide you with the highly personalised African adventure you’ve always dreamed of but without the hassle of planning it all yourself!

Rock My Adventures aren’t typical ‘tours’. They’re fun, laid-back group trips, with an awesome, action-packed itinerary, but with some free time to explore and do your own thing and a group of friends built in – the best of both worlds!

South Africa, Swaziland & Mozambique Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Johannesburg, South Africa

Arrive in Johannesburg and relax and get to know your fellow travellers during a welcome meal and a beer or two at a fantastic local restaurant! Your Rock My South Africa, Swaziland & Mozambique Adventure starts here and you’re going to LOVE it!

*  If you have the time and can arrive earlier, I can organise any other activities you wish to do. Additional accommodation and activities charged separately. There are really cool local markets on Saturday and Sunday so if you do fancy arriving early, we can go exploring! 🙂

Meals Included: Dinner

Day 2: Johannesburg, South Africa

Street Art, Maboneng, JohannesburgToday will be spent exploring the cosmopolitan city of Johannesburg or ‘Jozi’ as the South Africans call it.

In the morning, we’ll head over to Nelson Mandela’s former home, the infamous and often misunderstood Soweto township.

We’ll take our tour on our bicycles to see the many different sections of the area, learning about the Soweto uprisings and the resistance against the Apartheid regime.

We’ll stop at a number of different food stalls along the way to grab some local snacks, as well as a local pub known as a ‘shebeen’ where you can taste the local beer and hear stories of African customs and traditions finishing with a traditional South African lunch.

You will get a great insight into Soweto and learn how the communities have evolved over the years to become what you see today.

We’ll be staying in one of the hippest neighbourhoods in the city, so we’ll spend the afternoon strolling the streets, checking out the street art and cool shops in our local area.

In the evening, we’ll have a meal out at another great local restaurant and those who want to can experience the Joburg nightlife, or you chill back at the hostel with some of the other backpackers or get an early night ready for our trip tomorrow!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3: Hazyview, South Africa

God's Window, Blyde River Canyon, South AfricaToday we’ll start our journey towards the incredible Kruger National Park.

We’ll take the scenic route, stopping in the historic gold mining village of Pilgrim’s Rest before having lunch in the village of Graskop.

However the highlight of the day is stopping at God’s Window on the Drakensberg escarpment to see one of the most beautiful views in all of South Africa over the Blyde River Canyon.

We’ll spend the night in lovely Hazyview, ready for an early start into Kruger tomorrow.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4 – 5: Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kruger National Park Tour, South AfricaToday we’ll head into Kruger National Park for 2 full days of safari!

Kruger is one of the best safari destinations on the planet and you’ll have the chance to see many of your favourite safari animals including the ‘Big Five’ – lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalos.

On one of our evenings we’ll take a sunset sundowner game drive, probably the most beautiful time of day to be in the park.

And on the other evening, we’ll head back to camp for the ultimate South African pastime – the braai (that’s a bbq to you and me) – cooked by me (I’m a good cook, I promise) and our guide, but you can help too, or you can just chill with a beer, it’s totally up to you!

Meals Included: 2 x Breakfast, 2 x Lunch, 2 x Dinner

Day 6: Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Swaziland

Swaziland TourLeaving Kruger, we’ll road trip over to the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, an outdoor lover’s paradise in the Kingdom of Swaziland. The area we are staying in is known as Ezulwini Valley (which means the ‘Valley of Heaven’).

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 7: Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Swaziland

Mantenga Cultural Village, SwazilandToday we’re going to visit the Mantenga Cultural Village. This will give us an insight into Swazi customs and you will get to enjoy traditional Swazi singing and dancing. You can even join in if you want to!

From here, we’ll visit the Mantenga Waterfall before moving on to Lobamba township and village where we will have the chance to look around and meet the local people who are some of the friendliest I’ve met in all of Africa. Many of the local men still wear traditional dress and most of the time they’re very happy to have their photo taken wth you and will be curious to find out about where you come from too, so it’s always a wonderful day.

In the evening, we’ll go for a meal at the fabulous House on Fire, Swaziland’s premier entertainment venue which is also incredibly quirky and very photogenic!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 8: Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Swaziland

Sibebe Rock, SwazilandToday is a free day where you will be able to take part in one of the many amazing activities on offer in Swaziland.

Activities include horse riding or mountain biking through the beautiful reserve, going on a village walk, white water rafting, tubing, abseiling, hiking Sibebe Rock, quad biking, guided or self-guided hikes or a ziplining canopy tour through the stunning mountain wilderness of the Malolotja Nature Reserve. If you love adventure, you’ll LOVE Swaziland!

Swaziland is an incredible place, so whatever you choose to do will be a lot of fun (and very pretty) but there are few things more magical than riding a horse or a bike through rolling green hills in the African bush, surrounded by animals like zebra and wildebeest. Weather permitting, you may even be able to do a sunset ride!

For our last evening in Swaziland, we’ll have a sunset braai, with sundowners in our beautiful wildlife reserve, surrounded by nature.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 9: Maputo, Mozambique

Maputo Fish MarketToday, we’ll cross the border and over into fabulous Mozambique and our first stop is the cool, cosmopolitan capital, Maputo.

Time permitting, we’ll arrive in Mozambique in the early afternoon. There should be some free time to relax, shop at the FEIMA Arts & Crafts Market (Maputo has some great shopping) or walk about before we go out for a meal at the local fish market where you may or may not eat the best seafood of your life (I don’t eat prawns, but my friends all agreed they were the best they’d ever had – I will take their word for it).

Then we’ll get an early night as we have an early bus in the morning up to Tofo!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 10: Tofo, Mozambique

Tofo, Mozambique TourToday is a travel day as we take the public bus to Tofo! This is a bit of an adventure and what I would call ‘proper’ backpacking. Good thing is, we’re all in this together!

But just you wait until we get there! Tofo is one of the most awesome places in Africa (seriously, you will be in love with this place), with a gorgeous beach that stretches for miles and an intoxicating laid-back vibe.

We’re staying at the fabulous Mozambeat Motel, which I know you’ll love! We’ll settle into our new surroundings with a group meal and tonight is also movie night at Mozambeat which usually draws a nice crowd.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 11: Tofo, Mozambique

Boat Trip, Tofo, Mozambique

Today we’ll take an island tour and dhow trip.

This is a really fun day out and a chance to see a different way of life.

We’ll also have the chance to do some snorkelling and enjoy a local lunch on the island.

Last time I was there, the chief asked if I would like to become his 3rd wife. I’m thinking about it… I mean, it’s a pretty nice island…  (check out my saved Instagram Stories).

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 12: Tofo, Mozambique

Tofo, Mozambique

We’ll have a chilled day today whilst you get your bearings in beautiful Tofo.

I’ll show you around town, go to a local pub or two, we’ll visit the market where you can do some shopping and I’ll introduce you to my friend who is an excellent tailor, so if anyone wants any clothes made – he’s your guy!

We’ll eat lunch at my favourite little restaurant in the market and those who want to can take a walk or just chill on the beach. Or you can go back to the hotel and hang by the pool – it’s totally up to you!

Alternatively you can book onto one of the activities on offer (see below).

Tonight is also Friday night, which is PARTY night in Tofo, so those who want to can let their hair down and do some shakin’ what your mama gave you! The Mozambeat Motel often holds pool parties and theme nights with DJ’s and bands, so we may be lucky to catch one of those!

Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 13: Tofo, Mozambique

Whale Shark, Tofo, MozambiqueTofo isn’t the kind of place where you ‘plan’ too much, so today is a free day just to be and see where your time there takes you!

However, there are lots of cool things to do, some of which we’ll need to book a day or two ahead of time! Options include: going on an ocean safari to spot whale sharks and manta rays, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, quad biking, tour the old Portuguese colonial city Inhambane and surfing.

In the evening, we’ll head out on a sunset cruise on the Indian Ocean, the perfect way to end our time in Tofo.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 14: Maputo, Mozambique

FAIMA, Maputo, MozambiqueToday we’ll make our way back to Maputo. We should be there in good time to do any last minute shopping before we head out on the town for our last evening together.

We’ll go for a meal in one of Maputo’s great restaurants and then see if we can catch some live music, something the city is known for.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 15: Departure Day

Today is always a sad day as we say goodbye to our new friends (there’s usually a few tears, I will warn you), but the memories and shared experiences will last a lifetime!

I can arrange the transfer to Maputo International Airport or you can continue your Africa travels from there.

*  If you want to stay in Tofo or continue north in Mozambique from there, you can. Just let me know and we can discuss and pro rata your trip.

*  Or if you want to fly back from Johannesburg, I can help arrange that too. Intercape buses travel from Maputo to Johannesburg daily. Just leave enough time to get there!

Rock My Tanzania & Zanzibar Adventure – 2017

“I would like to thank you for two of the most extraordinary trips I have ever had the joy of experiencing. As I review my photos I feel so overwhelmed. I had the pleasure to meet some amazing people thanks to you. We had great times just sitting around and joking with each other. If anyone is in doubt about booking a tour through Rock My Adventure, don’t hesitate, you’ll never regret it . Thank you, Helen. You are amazing! ❤ Go and you will thank me afterwards.” (Oana, Switzerland)

“This trip is definitely one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made in my life!!” (Sharmi, Malaysia)

“The trip went beyond my expectations. I feel the soul of the trip was Helen. Having a guide that is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, sweet and energetic is very important.” (Nayeli, Mexico/USA)

Rock My Kenya Adventure – 2017

“I had the best time ever on the trip & it was so much fun traveling with you! It was everything I had hoped for and more! It 100% met my expectations. I love the fact that your trips are more unique than a normal tour operator. I enjoyed being taken out of my comfort zone in some places and seeing some really different sides of Kenya. I enjoyed the fact that we were made to feel so at home everywhere we went and I’m sure that was helped by the fact you’ve obviously created a lot of meaningful friendships in the country during your time travelling there. It felt like we got a more unique experience than you would get with usual tour operator. I think you make a fantastic guide and your passion for the country definitely shows and adds to the experience.” (Sarah, UK)

“Thank you for one of the best two weeks of my life. By far the most incredible holiday I’ve ever been on. It was run so brilliantly by you and honestly, I had so much fun. I won’t forget some of our hilarious nights out.” (Allanagh, UK)

“This is the best thing I could have done for myself to boost my confidence. It was honestly the best thing I have ever done in my life, bar none. I have made genuine friends that I’m already planning to meet with again. Take me with you everywhere you go…..everywhere! Thank you so much for doing the job you do, I can’t explain how amazing this trip was.” (Kayleigh, UK)

Rock My Uganda, Rwanda & DRC Adventure – 2017

“Helen is one of those people who will make any situation really fun. This girl could make a tour through my mildewy basement seem like a blast, so having her introduce me to sub-Saharan Africa was pretty much the best thing ever!!” (Silvia, Norway/USA)

“This was everything I hoped for and more. If the plane had crashed on the way home, I would have died happy!” (Natalie, Northern Ireland)

Rock My Kenya Adventure – 2016

“Everything was amazing! I learned so many things!” (Oana, Switzerland)

“It was an amazing trip from start to end. I loved every moment and made friends for life.” (Debbie, UK)

“Africa is not always the easiest place to travel around, and after 3 months of backpacking I was all ready to give my brain a break from travel planning, so it was definitely a relief to have Helen come in and manage all that! I like her tour because it fit me – it was a small group tour, just 8 of us which is a nice number to make new friends and get to know everyone yet have our own thing, and it was a good mix of fancier stuff and indie backpacking. You just might see us on the next tours because we are all game for round 2 with Helen! Definitely a 5 star review ⭐! (Jac, Singapore)

“I’ve a lot to thank my African adventure for, it truely did help me find myself and has given me the confidence to just go see the world. I never wanted to leave!!! You’ll have the most amazing experience!!!” (Karen, UK)

“It was a great introduction into Africa travel, before I set out solo travelling. Also as I traveled solo and shared experiences in Kenya with people I was meeting, I sounded like a seasoned solo traveler thanks to you. I did not know what to expect but I think I understand Kenya pretty well now. I think you were able to portray and pass on your infectious love of Kenya to us all and I am forever grateful! Asante!” (Christina, USA)

If you’d like to get a full overview, have a read of Silvia’s blog (Heart My Backpack), as she’s done a full review on the Rock My Uganda, Rwanda and DRC tour. I asked her to come along, not as a blogger, but as a participant, to enjoy and just be brutally honest when she wrote about it and here’s what she thought.
