I’m a bit behind with the Insta posts (FB is up to date) but here goes…

On day 3 of the Rock My Uganda & Rwanda Adventure we climbed Mount Bisoke which stands at 3,711m (it says that on the sign, although Google says 3,696m - but I’m having the extra 15m)!

I’ve done it before but I’d forgotten what a tough old climb it was! One of the girls called it ‘Bisoke No Jokey’! Another said this is ‘Type 2 Fun’ - the type that isn’t fun at the time but when you look back it’s a great or funny memory!

But, we all got to the top to have lunch and admire the beautiful crater lake! Me, mostly with the help of one of our porters, Major! 🙏🏻

Getting down was an adventure in itself! My whole body ached, but afterwards we were staying at Lake Kivu, the perfect place to relax!

Kicking off day 2 with a visit to colourful #Nyami

Kicking off day 2 with a visit to colourful #Nyamirambo and the wonderful Nyamirambo Women’s Centre in Kigali, which included an incredible local lunch made by the women and their students!

Then it was onward to Gisenyi for dinner, rest and sitting around the fire and to get ready for our trek up Mount Bisoke!

The Rock My Uganda & Rwanda Adventure has begun!

Great first day exploring beautiful, clean and safe Kigali!

We spent the day visiting some great social enterprises, women-led businesses, an arts centre and one of Rwanda’s famous milk bars.

We ended the day with a birthday party at one of Kigali’s coolest bars/restaurants.

One of my (and my groups’) favourite things we do on the Rock My Kenya & Tanzania Adventure tour is spending time in my friends’ Maasai village.

I’ve been visiting the village for the last 8 years and in that time have made some great friends and learned a lot about Maasai culture and I love sharing this experience with the groups.

We do all the usual activities like making fire, singing and Maasai jumping, but we also get to do other things like hanging out and chatting around the campfire, having a cuppa at one of their houses and once we even got invited to a 21st birthday party in the village… that was fun! 🎉

I’ve visited many Maasai villages in my time and sometimes the experience isn’t very nice for either the local people or the tourists. It can often feel voyeuristic, inauthentic and uncomfortable, so it’s important to do your research in order to visit a village that a) really want you there and b) where you will get the opportunity for a cultural exchange - not just a drive-by photo opportunity.

On the @rockmyadventure tours, it’s super important to me to ensure that our interactions with local people, especially tribespeople are ethical, non-exploitative and fun for everyone involved. I’ve written about this in more detail on my blog if you want to know more!

An incredible morning hot-air ballooning over the Masai Mara, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush! 🥂

On the way back to camp, we also got a bonus safari, seeing a young male lion with a kill (poor giraffe) and ‘The Coalition’ again.
